The Quick Verdict: New Balance Fresh Foam X CT-Rally v2
PaddleDB Rating: 8.6 / 10 | Best For: Stability and Stopping Power, joint protection, and wide feet.
After 100+ hours of testing on abrasive outdoor hard courts, the New Balance Fresh Foam X CT-Rally v2 stands out for its elite stopping power, grounded court feel, and minmal-fatigue support that protects your knees and arches for 2.5+ hours straight. While heavy sliders and high-frequency players will burn through the NDurance outsole around the 75-hour mark, New Balance’s 6-month outsole durability warranty turns a pricey $150 shoe into a $75/pair value play.
The Testing Conditions
I am a size 9 - 9.5 (Men’s) depending on the brand. For this shoe, I tested a men’s size 9 in a D width. The 9's fit perfectly for length. The left shoe felt slightly narrow at exactly the midpoint of my foot, something I also noticed with the Adidas Barricade 13. I’m confident that switching to an E width would resolve this issue, while still delivering the performance highlights below. New Balance’s sizing and width options make them some of the best wide court shoes for tennis and pickleball.
This shoe was primarily played on outdoor hardcourt on a mix of newly constructed courts (i.e. a rougher surface) and old outdoor courts (less surface abrasion). About 15% of games were played on indoor courts during this test period.
Shoes were strictly worn on the court during play sessions (no walking or non-court wear) and placed on a non-heated fan-enable “boot dryer” after each session to decrease material breakdown from moisture.
The Performance and Feel
This shoe really excels in 3 key areas:
Top-tier stopping power: due to the flat, balanced design of the outsole and the stiffening features of the upper and outer toebox/midfoot. Some may find these features “bulky” and “stiff” but they add the necessary structure to feel extremely stable going from sprint to hard stop in one split-step motion.
Grounded Feel: This flat outsole design paired with a lower (closer to ground) insole also gives a tactile rooted/grounded feel with the court. This feel gives me a consistent balance and more confidence when sliding at the kitchen line.
Impact Reduction: This shoe’s cushioning and impact resistance allows me to easily play on an outdoor hard court for 2.5hrs without any knee or calf fatigue. I do start noticing this start to appear around the 2hr 45min mark in the calves specifically. This shoe’s stock insoles completely mitigates any arch pain that I get from most shoes ( I usually swap out the stock insoles for SuperFeet or Move Gameday Pros).
Other minor benefits:
The shoe has a fairly basic lacing system, but it works surprisingly well. One nit-picky gripe I have are the length and thickness of the laces that detracts from the style and are ever so slightly distracting as they flop around; easy fix with a lace swap though. With that, I am a big fan of the shoe tongue; easily my favorite of all shoes tested in 2026. It has minimal, but intentional padding, keeping it streamlined, thin, and light-weight, while still preventing 0 lace bite (which is sometimes an issue for me) no matter how tight I laced my shoes.
Core Technical Specifications
- Midsole: Full-length Fresh Foam X for maximum impact absorption and responsive energy return.
- Stability Architecture: Bottom-loaded TPU shank and molded external heel counter for torsional rigidity during explosive lateral movements.
- Upper Technology: Reinforced NDure upper with targeted breathability zones and secure midfoot tongue lockdown.
- Outsole Construction: Ndurance rubber compound featuring a modified herringbone tread pattern, backed by a six-month outsole durability guarantee.
- Width Availability: Offered in standard (D) and wide (2E) sizing profiles.
The Durability
The front outsole started off with shallow and fine tread to begin with. I believe this gives the shoe its’ grounded feel and sliding ability, but also contributes to a faster wear.
Around 75hrs in, I already saw significant wear on the outer edge of both soles.

This quickly materialized into an exposed foam midsole with only an additional 25hrs of wear. The NB warranty accepts shoes with this level of wear since the foam midsole is exposed.

Pros & Cons Breakdown
Pros
- Exceptional Impact Protection: The signature Fresh Foam X midsole significantly reduces joint fatigue during multi-hour matches.
- Stopping Power + Stability: The flat sole and firm construction with the external heel counter give the shoe supreme stopping power on split steps and lateral cuts.
- Multiple Widths: Available in true wide options (E and 2E), making it a rare, high-performance choice for players with wider feet.
- Break-In Period: Out-of-the-box feel feels stable, but not rigid only requiring a 1- to 2 hour wear-in period for the foam and upper to soften. By the end of your first pickleball or tennis session, these will be almost fully broken in.
- Outsole Warranty: The CT Rally is among the New Balance shoes with a 6-month outsole warranty.
Cons
- Heat Retention: The durability-focused upper runs slightly warm, resulting in average breathability during hot summer outdoor play.
- Moderate Longevity: New Balance claims that their NDurance rubber outsole withstand aggressive sliding, but I found that the outside balls of my feet wore quickly in ~4 months. Utilizing the NB Warranty (detailed below) moves the longevity rating to High.
- Moderately Heavy: Weighing around 15 to 16 ounces, it prioritizes robust support over ultra-lightweight speed. You can definitely feel this when running down short drops from the baseline and when making transitions.
Value Proposition: Mixed opinion
The Annual Cost Breakdown:
- Retail Price: $150 per pair
- Standard Annual Cost (No Warranty): $450/year (3 pairs needed to cover 12 months of play)
- Warranty-Optimized Cost: $300/year for 4 pairs ($75 effective cost per pair — buy 2 pairs over the year, claim 2 free replacements via New Balance's 6-Month Outsole Durability Guarantee)
The Warranty Catch (What to Plan For):
- Backup Footwear Required: You need a second pair of court shoes in rotation while your warranty claim processes.
- Manual Claim Friction: You have to contact New Balance customer service, box up the worn shoes, and ship them back (NB provides the prepaid return label).
- 4-Week Turnaround: Expect roughly a 1-month wait from the day you drop the box off to the day the replacement pair lands on your doorstep.
Final Thoughts / Review Summary
All in all, the New Balance CT Rally X v2 may be one of the best pickleball shoes for hardcourts. When you factor in the warranty, the durability of the CT Rally is top tier. The impact resistant foam midsole keeps your feet healthy and your legs from premature fatigue. If you're someone who values stability over lightweight agility, this shoe is definitely a top contender.
